Welcome aboard!
Cindy, Libby, and I are excited to be working with you. Welcome aboard. Dr. Jay
Just a couple of quick reminders: 1) Dr. Buckley and I will be completing and posting grades at the conclusion of the seminar (with the exception of those of you applying for masters credit). Please bring all completed work, including a) your Cornell Notes (Why History & Undaunted Courage), b) Reflective journal (to be completed during the seminar), c) complete all blog posts related to Lemov’s “Teach Like a Champion”, d) read the preface to Geoffrey C. Ward: “The West: An Illustrated History”, complete your short paper (review your paper work for a details on the assignment- be sure to include 32 hole punched copies). Come prepared to share your research with the group. e) Trial participants should have read “By His Own Hand” and come prepared to participate actively in the mock trial. Those not participating in the trial should have read their assigned text, i.e. “Naya Nuki” or “Sacagawea”.
2) Bring your books with you. Plan on keeping “The West: An Illustrated History” at the ready, all others can be packed away until needed for the pedagogy sessions Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
3) Check your packing list to make sure you are prepared. Given the wet weather we have been experiencing, be sure to come prepared for both dry and wet/ cold and hot weather.
4) Given the height and speed of the river, and based on the suggestion of the river outfitters we will be travelling via river rafts vs. canoes (sorry there were no pirogues available). Think ahead regarding what you may need to have with you ON the boat during the day in your small dry bag...rain gear, gloves, fleece sunscreen, etc. etc. (the river outfitters will also have an "overage" bag in the raft for jackets, sweaters, and bulky items that won't fit in smaller personal dry bag.) As wells as what you will send in the large dry bag ahead and not see until camp on Friday night... sleeping bag, change of clothes, etc.. ( It is often a bit stressful to part with some items, but pre-planning will help you)
5) Lastly, much of the success of the field seminar is dependent on the bus driver and river guides. Traditionally we like to leave these crucial participants with a tip for their efforts. The tip is provided by you, the recipients not those funding the seminar. Generally we leave a minimum of $10.00 for each from each participant, please keep $20.00 in cash so that we can collect and gift this at the end of the seminar.
We are very excited for the opportunity we will have to learn together. The bus will not wait for late arrivals be on time- we will see you all bright and early Monday morning.
I'm here and looking forward to this adventure.
